Why Area Tool & Manufacturing Is a Strong Partner for Mid-Volume 5-Axis Machining

At Area Tool & Manufacturing, our flexibility and problem-solving make us an excellent partner for complex parts that require 5-axis machining. Customers can work with a team that understands challenging geometries and trust that we’ll be able to handle their repeat mid-volume production.

5-Axis Machining at Mid Volumes

Traditional 3-axis machining may require several different setups to reach the different features of a complex part. Every additional setup takes time and introduces another opportunity for error.

Our Okuma GENOS M460V-5AX 5-axis machining center lets us approach these parts more efficiently. The machine moves along the X, Y, and Z linear axes while rotating on two additional axes, so we have access to multiple sides of a workpiece in a single setup.

The Cost Efficiencies of 5-Axis

5-Axis Machining

Many customers may assume that 5-axis machining will inevitably lead to higher costs, but that’s not the case at Area Tool & Manufacturing. We plan extensively at the start of a project to maximize efficiency, helping us control costs throughout production.

This is especially valuable in mid-volume projects, where any setup that can be eliminated saves time across the entire production run.

Repeatability for Production Parts

As production volumes increase, consistency becomes even more important. Our customers need us to meet the same specifications all the way through the final part.

Once we prove a machining process, we can apply it throughout the order. Our machinists inspect important details so that parts continue to meet customer requirements.

This consistency is particularly essential for frequently consumed parts. For parts like these, a late shipment or quality issue can disrupt an entire operation. That is why we have such a focus on dependable delivery in mid-volume work.

Capabilities That Complement Each Other

Of course, complex parts often require more than one machine or process. One of Area Tool’s greatest strengths is the way our capabilities complement one another.

Even advanced 5-axis machining may not be sufficient to produce every feature of a part. Sharp internal corners, for example, can be difficult with traditional machining. In these cases, sinker EDM offers another way to create these features.

Having these capabilities all in the same facility helps us develop a manufacturing plan around the complete part rather than trying to force every feature onto a single machine.

Trust a Partner That Plans

Successful mid-volume production begins with an evaluation of the part and its requirements. We will ask important questions and determine whether the project is a strong fit for our capabilities.

If we commit to an order and delivery date, we take that commitment seriously. Customers who already trust us with prototypes or low-volume work can scale with the same experienced team instead of beginning again with an unfamiliar supplier.

Whether you are increasing production for an existing part or sourcing a new complex component, Area Tool is ready to discuss how our 5-axis machine shop can support your mid-volume requirements. Request a quote today!
